30 Years Ago My Little Pony: The Movie was released

My Little Pony The Movie 30th anniversary edition DVDOkay, well, it’s not quite 30 years ago just yet.  Technically, the 30th Anniversary of the release of the 1986 animated pony movie will be on June 20th, 2016, but who’s keeping track, really?

Shout! Factory has decided to jump the gun and release My Little Pony: The Movie a little earlier, and by earlier, we mean next week.    You can pre-order the 30th Anniversary DVD on Amazon here.

Originally release on June 20th, 1986 My Little Pony: The Movie was produced by Hasbro, Sunbow, Toei Animation and Marvel.  It was distributed by Dino De Laurentiis, the producer behind such movies as 1984’s Dune and the 1976 remake of King Kong.

It featured the voices of actors:  Danny DeVito, Madeline Kahn, Cloris Leachman, Rhea Perlman and Tony Randall.

Of course, the movie was released theatrically to support Hasbro’s toy line, but the movie didn’t fare well with movie critics.   It wasn’t until it was released onto home video the year following its release that the movie started to gain attention with My Little Pony fans.

Do you remember seeing it?  Were you a fan of it growing up?  Are you excited to see it for the first time 30 years after its release?  Tell us below in the comments!
